The third edition of the Kaleidoscope project opens, bearing witness to the artistic research and practices emerging within the School of Painting at the Brera Academy. This year’s exhibition project, titled Exploration, represents the culmination of the Academic Year’s educational journey, with particular focus on the site-specific dimension and dialogue with the surrounding territory.
The School of Painting is distinguished by its heterogeneity and by a teaching approach that encourages students to engage with real-world contexts, going beyond the walls of the Academy. Exploration offers an opportunity to interact with spaces rich in history and cultural identity, such as the Visconti Castle in Legnano and the Museo Butti | Contemporanea in Viggiù—emblematic places that inspire deep reflections on the genius loci.
The project stems from a dual agreement: the first, already well-established, between the Academy and the Municipality of Legnano, which has led to the creation of cultural events within the spaces of the Visconti Castle; the second, more recent, involves the Municipality of Viggiù and the Museo Butti | Contemporanea, along with the nearby Multipurpose Center, providing a more intimate and secluded environment for artistic experimentation.
Curated and coordinated by the team of faculty members Piermario Dorigatti, Arcangelo Esposito, Daniela Moro, Pantaleo Ragno, Tetsuro Shimizu, and Maria Tcholakova, the project involves the participation of 69 students, along with 10 international students from the Erasmus program. The works on display—ranging from painting, sculpture, drawing, and photography to installation—have been conceived in direct relation to the exhibition spaces and engage in dialogue with the cultural and historical memory of the places that host them.
At the Museo Butti | Contemporanea and the Centro Polifunzionale in Viggiù, the works of the following artists will be on display:
Angelica Alessio, Salvatore Arena, Adriano Bassi, Elia Berardi, Sara Boglioni, Letizia Calloni, Martina Calvano, Martina Cinotti, Sara D’Amore, Matteo De Marco, Elisa Dell’Era, Carlo Di Bella, Raffaele Farber, Lisa Galiussi, Philipp Gentili, Alice Geymonat, Alessandra Lanza, Barbara Lodigiani, Valentina Macrì, Carlotta Maffiuletti, Noa Manor Partel, Davide Mastrolia, Simona Mastropietro, Camilla Micioni, Valentina Nisi, Nicola Nobili, Giorgia Pavan, Margherita Peviani, Alice Riva, Celeste Sala, Lisa Scarella, Giulia Senn, Giorgia Sgrò, Raffaele Sotgiu, Enrico Verger, Silvia Zaccour.
Kaleidoscope – Exploration is an integral part of the initiatives promoted by the Archivi del Contemporaneo network—a cultural project spread across the Lombardy region that aims to enhance contemporary artistic and documentary heritage through a network of museums, archives, and cultural institutions.
Led by MA*GA in Gallarate, the Network annually promotes the Archivifuturi Festival: a series of exhibitions and project-based events held across its various locations. Together, they form a shared cultural itinerary that highlights local specificities, circulates new ideas, and strengthens the sense of community through art.
A catalog will accompany the exhibition, documenting the students’ works and creative journeys, as well as the relationship between the artworks and the spaces in which they are situated, contributing to the collective narrative of the third edition of Kaleidoscope.
